Dr. Patricia Easteal

I am an expatriate North American academic who has lived in Australia for the past 18 years. Over the past 15 years, I have written a number of books about violence against women published by Australian Government Agencies (Killing the Beloved; The Forgotten Few), Spinifex Press (Voices of the Survivors), Federation (Balancing the Scales: Rape Law Reform and Australian Culture), Butterworths Less Than Equal- Women and the Australian Legal System), BIMPR-Gov (Shattered Dreams) and chapters in books by Allan and Unwin, Lawbook Company, Spinney and Longman.
I have done extensive media (radio, television, and print) and have extensive teaching and public speaking experience. I'm quite well known in Australia and through my books' distribution and papers published in international journals and presenting papers at international conferences, I have some recognition internationally. I have also worked extensively as a volunteer in the women's sector serving on Management Committees for refuges and Rape Crisis Centres.

I'm a 39 year-old Australian woman with an Associate Diploma in Welfare Studies (La Trobe University, Victoria, 1996). I am also a survivor of domestic violence and partner rape.
In my early 20's, I embraced anti-rape activism, and have remained committed to this cause for 17 years. University enabled me to study domestic violence - most particularly focusing on rape as a feature. As I studied, I had opportunities to work with survivors of rape and domestic violence in a professional setting.
My volunteer activities include: Training and working as a court-supporter for battered women; helping run a support group for survivors of rape; fundraising and organizing Australian National Day of Action Against Sexual Assault;  emceeing and assisting in organizing Reclaim the Night marches; public speaking on sexual assault via these and other activities; drafting emails for a mailing list set up to combat inaccurate media representations of sexual assault;  maintaining a website, Aphrodite Wounded, as a support resource for girls and
women raped by partners.
